They're cheap, take up very little population and are the most cost effective. Your tanks are hands down the most powerful in the game. take a priest with your army, and drop a turret once you start getting attacked. You also get the best turrets in the game, and the best builder units. It's worth putting a tech priest in a building to get 5 crazy powerful guns for 1 unit when you're attacked. The lasguns they fire when garrisoned are about 4x more powerful than normal lasguns. The trick is learning which opening (barracks or tactica) to go for against which armies, and using the garrison ability properly.
